YOUR PRIESTHOOD, YOUR INHERITANCE
“But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.” Joshua 18:7
Joshua’s ministry and assignment from the Lord was very clear. He was to take the children of Israel into the land the Lord God promised them and to settle them in their inheritance. This meant that he would literally lead them to fight those nations, conquer them and then divide the land amongst the twelve tribes.
There was however a tribe that had a unique inheritance arrangement from the Lord. It was the tribe of Levi. They were not to receive any physical lands. This was the tribe of Levi.
Levi was specially chosen of the Lord to be a tribe of priests.
In our opening text, the Lord makes a very important statement, which was repeated in some form or the other throughout the writings of Moses. The Levites were not to be given any physical possession.
I want you to imagine for a moment the joy and celebration that must have surrounded a tribe being given its own land. These were choice lands, vineyards, winepresses etc which they would come to own and possess as their own. But Levi had no such privilege to call theirs.
From a human standpoint, they probably must have felt very disadvantaged but certainly not with God.
The Lord specifically tells Joshua that ‘the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance’. Simply, it must mean that this ‘priesthood of the Lord’ must carry the same value as the inheritance the other tribes got or even much more!
In essence, in administering the priesthood of the Lord, all of Levi’s needs will be met for all generations.
Moses records the same thoughts but elaborates on the priesthood;
“At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day. Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.”
Levi had no part nor inheritance with his brethren for the Lord was his inheritance. Maybe you still don’t get the import of this. The same way the other tribes could lay claim to a physical land and use it to meet their every needs, so also Levi could lay claim to God and be rest assured that their every need was met.
In their priesthood was their provision.
The beauty of this is that according to the Apostle Peter, we are priests unto God today!
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”
1 Peter 2:9
As such, if truly we are the priests of the most high, we can’t chase after a physical inheritance like everyone else. Our priesthood is our inheritance. The Lord is our portion.
Dear Father, i Thank you Father for being the portion of my inheritance; I boldly declare that the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places and I have a goodly heritage. I declare that i have Christ and He is all i need to live and fulfill the glorious life that God has called me to fulfill. You, LORD, are all I have, and you give me all I need. Thank You Dear Heavenly Father, for i begin to walk in this light, in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen!
