WORDS OVER WINDS
“For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! “James 3:2-5 (NKJV)
The human tongue is his greatest asset and at the same time his greatest danger. Many think that what people do to them or where they were born is the reason for their failures or rough path in life. Ironically others think their greatest advantage is their strong genes, wealthy family lineage, or their connections. Truth is that’s inconsistent with what the Bible teaches.
Spiritual maturity which is the formation of Christ in the inner life and the ability to live above the elements of the outer life is measured by your mastery of words. James says that we offend and stumble in everything but the one who’s perfect in words is the perfect man. Isn’t it amazing how the Bible standard of perfection is so far from human opinions.
I want you today to place the highest premium on your tongue. It’s your greatest asset. Your life is ruled by your words regardless of anything and everything that’s stacked against you.
James makes this clear in this text. In verse four, he lists three factors that ultimately determine every mans lot in life.
First are the fierce winds. Note that the only purpose they serve is to grant thrust and momentum to the ships.
Second is the small rudder indicative of your tongue. It determines direction, not the fierce winds. A skillful sailor takes advantage of the momentum provided by the fierce winds.
Last is the sailor or pilots’ desire. What he has envisioned within him is more powerful than whatever life throws at him.
So many times we are focused on the fierce winds. No matter how fierce the winds blow, they are there to serve just one purpose- give momentum. Your desire and your words are the two factors that determines where you end.
The winds don’t determine your direction. You can take advantage of any fierce wind by the skilful use of your words.
Words trump over winds anyway, anytime.
Words over Winds!
I bridle my tongue and make progress with my tongue. I chart my course in life and determine the direction of my life with the use of my tongue. Against contrary situations and limiting circumstances, i steer my life in the right direction with the use of my tongue. Halleluyah!!, Amen.
