WHY MANY ARE POOR
“He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.”
King Solomon the writer of the book of Proverbs is considered the richest man that ever lived. He certainly knows something about wealth and poverty.
His writings are full of admonitions about the subject.
In today’s scripture, he hammers in on two critical issues that are very instrumental to a life of lack.
Interestingly the two things he mentioned are major issues besetting this generation and unfortunately believers too.
First is the issue of loving pleasure. One translation calls it thrills. Many love the pleasures of life. They love the thrills of this life as opposed to a life of focus and diligence. Many young people want to party, enjoy life and yet build a life of significance. Solomon says it’s impossible. If you love pleasure be ready for penury.
Now there are those who go to the extreme of saying, we shouldn’t have any pleasures in life. That’s not what he meant. He meant living a life of focus, diligence and vision.
The second thing he mentioned was ‘wine and oil’ which is indicative of materialism. We live in a world driven by the craze of materialism and covetousness. Many find their identity in their possessions. Outside of this they are empty. This drives them to buy and keep buying even beyond their means. They are consumed with the destructive lust for luxury and will do just anything to satisfy their craving.
As a believer you must understand that your worth is in your identity and your work not your possession.
Stop trying your worth to what you have or don’t have.
Focus on your assignment. Develop total blindness to anything that doesn’t help you fulfill your life’s mission.
Practice delayed gratification. Stop trying to please the joneses.
Practice being understated. Don’t wear your wealth. Don’t strut what you’re truly worth around.
I love what Solomon said in Proverbs 12:24,
“The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.”
Diligence and Focus are the foundations of wealth creation.
Thank you Dear Holy Spirit , for the Word of God that has come to me today. I am diligent and focused, and in pursuit of my God given vision. I let go of the thrills, pleasures and distractions that plague the world today, In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
