WHY DID JESUS COME?
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
Many have wondered why Jesus came? Actually truth be told, many more have given it no thought.
You see, your answer to this question makes all the difference in your Christian walk.
Because of what people think of why Jesus came, some love him, some hate him and others are simply indifferent.
The believers’ answer to this question determines how he approaches his faith.
For many, Christianity is a way out of their troubles whilst for others it’s simply an escape plan from hell.
Jesus to many is an insurance plan securing their eternal destiny.
Many Christians think he came to forgive their sins. He sure forgave our sins but that’s not why he came.
Some think he came to heal the sick. Jesus healed several sick persons while he walked the face of the earth but remember that the sick were healed in the Old Testament before he came.
Same with meeting the needs of humanity- Prophets of old worked miracles, provided for the needs of people in lack and even raised the dead. Jesus did all these but they weren’t the reason he came. Else he would have simply been a prophet.
But why did Jesus come? The Lord didn’t leave us in doubt as to why. In our text for the day, He told us why.
He said he came to give us life and to give us this life more abundantly.
This life is the first of the three gifts of God that Jesus brought; the others being righteousness and the Holy Spirit. In Romans 6:23, Paul describes this life as the Gift of God.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
What makes this unique is the meaning of the Greek word John used for life here. It’s not ‘Bios ‘which refers to biological life or ‘psuche’ that refers to the inner life, your psychology. It’s the word Zoe which is used in the New Testament of life as a principle, life in the absolute sense. It is the very life that God has.
Just in the same way that blood flows in the veins of a man, Zoe flows in Gods veins.
Jesus came to give us the very life of God. If he healed our bodies without giving us life, we would have been healed servants. If he had forgiven us without giving us life , we would have been forgiven servants.
But No! Jesus came to give us the very life of God that we may be called the sons of God.
He supplanted our human life with the very life of God so much so that the believer is not an ordinary person.
He now lives with the very life of God! This is why generational curses have no hold whatsoever on the believer. His life is no more reckoned after his human genealogy but the new life he now has!
The Apostle John speaking of what happened at our salvation put it succinctly, “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:13)
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the life you brought to us as believers. A life full of the very nature of God; a life that is unaffected by the circumstances of life; an indestructible and incorruptible life. Thank You for giving us the opportunity to become Sons of God, partakers of Your divine nature and verities. With this consciousness, we win daily and effect changes in our world for the Kingdom of God, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
