THE POWER OF THE MIND
“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Romans 8:6
I remember reading this text as a young boy who was so hungry for God and wanted more. I would usually pour through as many as forty chapters a day. This particular day I was reading as usual but got stuck on this verse. I just couldn’t go past it.
It suddenly dawned on me that it’s not carnality that’s the issue but the carnal mind! So also it wasn’t spirituality alone that mattered as it were. The key thing is the spiritual mind. Up until then, I had never heard anyone make that distinction.
You see, your mind is your greatest asset. A man may engage in acts of piety, holiness, godliness and spirituality but yet still experience death in his life.
He may be dedicated to prayers, fasting and the disciplines of our faith and yet not enjoy the higher life in Christ. Renewing the mind to the word of God is the key to experiencing the abundant life that Jesus brought us.
Little wonder Paul admonished us in Romans 12:1, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
This is the key to victory in the Christian life.
Imagine a man praying for prosperity but his mind is filled with images of poverty and his confessions filled with same, regardless of how sincere and fervent his prayers are, he’d remain in poverty and lack.
Ultimately your mind gives value to your actions. All the good actions will not matter more than the thoughts that are predominant in your heart.
It’s the spiritual mind that produces life and peace not a spiritual act. Well truth is, a spiritual mind will produce spiritual acts definitely.
In the same vein, it’s the carnal mind that begets death not necessarily a carnal act. By the same token, a carnal mind will certainly produce a carnal lifestyle.
The real job we have as believers is to renew our mind to the Word of God. By that, we mean, your thoughts and emotions are aligned with the scriptures. Fear isn’t of God. Living in fear and excusing it as being human is opening the door for death.
Both your thoughts and emotions are to be renewed with the word of God. And then and only then, can a man begin to enjoy the provisions of the scriptures.
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you, for your Word that renews my mind, transforms my life, reorganizes and re-programmes my thoughts in the direction of your perfect will for my life. As I consciously make your Word the contemplation of my spirit, my mind is filled with thoughts of progress and possibilities, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
