THE PASSION FOR SOULS
“I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:” Romans 9:1-3
There are very few things that comes close in intensity to the raging passion of a soul winner. A soul winner isn’t a passive Christian. The fire of God burns deep within his soul. It burns so bright that he can’t hold his peace.
Our world today talks down on soul winning. The church has practically gone mute on it but never before has there been a need for more soul winners.
Paul was a master soul winner. And his passion was possibly only second to the Lord Jesus Himself.
In one of those very rare moments, where the Apostle Paul isn’t sharing doctrine but by the inspiration of the Spirit he shares some of his personal cogitations, he penned Romans 9 down. I am convinced that every believer needs to read the first three verses till it literally burns a hole through your heart.
Paul is literally praying that he’s accursed by the Lord, separated from Christ if that is what’s needed for his kinsmen, the Israelites to be saved! The thought of it makes me sob.
What manner of man was Paul? What were his convictions?
What drove him deep within?
When he was home alone on his bed at night, what was he thinking?!
We can tell actually. He declares in our text that he was burdened with great heaviness of heart and continual sorrow. He was filled with bitter grief and incessant anguish.
He must have skipped meals, his eyes teary and many times unable to fellowship with others because of the heavy weight on his heart. He was burdened for the nation Israel.
In describing how far he was willing to go just to see them saved, he used one of the strongest words possible. Accursed! In the Greek, it’s the word ‘anathema’ which means to excommunicate. He didn’t mind an excommunication from the kingdom to make room for others to be saved! Oh my!
One translation says, if there’s anyway I could be cursed by the Messiah so they can be blessed by him, I’d do it in a minute.
What a passion! What a man!
Many are passionate about their careers. Some others about football. And yet some more about their ministries.
But, my friend, where’s your passion for souls? As true passion is shown by what it’s willing to sacrifice.
Jesus sacrificed himself.
Paul was willing to sacrifice himself.
Thank you dear Holy Spirit for the passion for soul winning burns fervently in my heart. I am an ardent, relentless soul winner, who helps to reconcile men to the kingdom of God. I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, as it is the only saving power to those who are hurting and dying in this world. As I open my mouth to speak and save the lost by winning souls for Christ, they also burn with the same passion to save the souls of others. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
