THE OIL OF GLADNESS
“Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.” Hebrews 1:9
The book of Hebrews is a theological masterpiece, unarguably one of Paul’s best letters. He was writing to convince a Jewish audience of the superiority of Christ and the Covenant we have in him compared to Moses and the law.
As such, he opens the book up in the first chapter with a strong discuss on why Christ is greater.
Tucked somewhere in that first chapter is a very interesting statement about Jesus.
Paul says that because Jesus loved righteousness and hated iniquity, God anointed Him with the oil of gladness above his fellows.
Two things I want you to note here.
First is that the oil of Gladness was such a valuable thing that God rewarded Him with it.
Second is that the oil of gladness was how one distinguished Jesus from His fellows. It was the mark of honor and promotion.
The oil of gladness refers to the work of the Holy Spirit within the heart of the believer causing him to be filled with and abound with Joy.
Joy is a force in the realm of the Spirit. Now this joy isn’t the same as happiness.
Happiness is as a result of external circumstances and situations. So when things go well, the fellow is excited but when things go south, as it will usually, then he’s in a bad shape emotionally.
You see, Joy is not an emotion. It’s totally independent of your circumstances. It’s a work of the Spirit in your heart. This doesn’t put the responsibility on God alone. Someone will read this and run off saying ‘well, I’m not joyful because God hasn’t made me joyful’
No! that’s wrong. Paul admonished the believer to rejoice always. The responsibility to ensure you are joyful is first yours. In Philippians 4:4, Paul said;
“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”
As you line up with the Word by choosing joy, the Lord rewards you by anointing you with the Spirit of Joy. This oil of Joy is how God promotes you out of that situation.
There’s joy that comes an exercise of your faith in the Word and there is the Oil of Gladness which is what God honors you with because you have honored His word.
Don’t loose your joy for it’s your promotion.
Dear Father, I thank you for giving me such a glorious life that radiates joy and peace. I’ve been brought into the life of unending joy, the joy that comes from the inner man and transcends physical circumstances. My joy is of the Spirit, and independent of circumstances; I’m ever strong and alive, for the joy of the Lord is my strength! Blessed be God! Hallelujah!!!
