THE MARK OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY
“For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Hebrews 5:13-14
In the body of Christ today we have differing standards and yardsticks for measuring spiritual maturity but the scriptures does not leave us in doubt as to what God expects.
Spiritual maturity is important. The scripture declares that “the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;” (Gal 4:1)
The heir is no different from a servant as long as he’s a child. He suffers the same fate and his life is no better than that of the servant.
You see, it’s a beautiful thing to be born again and given the blessing of sonship in Gods kingdom. Now everything is yours!
But we only enjoy what is ours to the extent that we develop ourselves spiritually.
If I own a Bentley, my son automatically has a claim to it but as long as he’s a minor I won’t hand him the keys.
In fact out of love I won’t hand him the keys. I’d keep the blessing of the Bentley away from him so he doesn’t harm himself till he’s ready to possess what rightfully belongs to him.
God is not holding anything away from you. For the most part He’s holding it away for you. He’s waiting on you to grow up!
Paul in our text speaks of two categories of people: babes and those who are of full age.
I want you to notice two words he used in both descriptions: unskillful and use.
There’s no discussion about knowledge here. Knowledge isn’t necessarily maturity.
Skill and Use are the marks of spiritual maturity. A man can know the Word so well, teach it so well but still be a babe.
Spiritual maturity is marked by your skillfulness in using the Word of Righteousness to deal with the issues that arise in your life.
No man became macho by reading about dumbbells. You have to pick them up and begin to exercise. Your muscles grow as they are used. It’s the same way with spiritual things. Stop seeking the easy way out always. Always ask, “how can I use the Word of God in this situation?”
Dear Heavenly Father, i thank You for Your word that has come to me today. I declare that by the use of the word of God, i continually grow thereby. I no longer behave, walk, and act like a babe. I use the word of God in every situation i come in contact with today and always. I declare that by the use of the word of God, i win and gain the victory. Thank You Dear Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
