THE CROSS: THE FOOLISHNESS OF GOD
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” 1 corinthians 1:18
The Lord committed the message of the Gospel to the Apostle Paul. He had the responsibility of bringing this message to a Gentile world who had no idea of what Jesus had come to do. Even the Jewish people who experienced Jesus firsthand only had a historical perspective of Him.
It takes revelation to know what Jesus came to do. And this revelation was granted unto the Apostle Paul.
In Gods wisdom, He chose the cross as the means to save the whole world. For you and I this may not mean anything but for the average Jew they knew exactly what this meant.
In their law, the cross was a symbol of the curse and judgement.
“And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.” Deuteronomy 21:22-23
There were several ways to execute a judgment of death in Israel but hanging on a tree was ultimate judgement. It was reserved for the greatest and vilest criminals.
This explains why Jesus’ death was such a big deal. Why choose the cross? To the rational mind, the cross is pure foolishness.
In fact let’s list a few reasons why the cross seems foolish;
• The folly of the sinless, innocent one dying for the guilty.
• The foolishness of having a way out and not take it.
• The folly of having the power to completely destroy his enemies but rather he allowed them destroy him.
• The folly of having the power to do miracles and rescue himself and yet do nothing.
• The folly of having an eloquent, impregnable defense and yet not opening your mouth.
• The folly of going to hell when you never had to leave heaven.
• The folly of volunteering to die!
• The folly of dying for a people who you know will eventually reject you!
And many more follies!
Couldn’t God simply with a word or a magic wand rid this world of sin and create a new race of righteous people?
Why the cross?!
You see, this is what we celebrate at Easter. We celebrate the foolishness of God which turns out to be the greatest, wisest and stealthiest rescue plans of all ages!
On the cross, Jesus hung becoming a curse for all mankind and delivering us from the curse and judgement we truly deserve.
In all of satan’s corrupted wisdom, he never would have imagined that a simple plan like this would be the grand rescue for all mankind!
By the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, He freed mankind form the tyranny of sin and death, the twin foul offsprings of satan.
When we contemplate this all we can say is ‘Thank you Lord for the Cross!’
Dearest Lord and my personal Saviour, I cannot thank you enough. You did the highest that could ever be done just because you wanted me saved. I am touched by your never ending love and your sacrifice that keeps giving. I cannot repay you but I assure you again, that forever Lord, I will remain committed to you and your cause. I love you Lord, now and always.Amen.
