THE BLESSING OF ADVERSITY
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;” James 1:2
If our lives as believers were to marked and graded basically by the instruction in James 1:2, I may be right saying that less than five percent will pass the test. Candidly, that’s still a generous number.
You see, the scriptures are clear and unambiguous of what our disposition towards adversity should be. James says to count it all Joy.
This instruction actually should be more interesting when we read the text in other translations;
“My friends, consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come your way,” GNT
“Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides.” MSG
Adversity is a gift. This truth is nonexistent in the theology of many christians. Now don’t misquote me. I didn’t say that God blesses us with adversity. In fact in the same first chapter of James, he says in verse thirteen, “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:”
So clearly God doesn’t tempt with evil.
I should also say here that God doesn’t use adversity to bless us. I know many people say, God can use and he sure uses the adverse situations to bless us. I know what they mean but it’s not exactly true.
You are the one who turns an adversity into a blessing. Not God!
In essence, with God and the adversity as constant factors, you are the variable. You determine whether or not the situation will become a blessing or a curse for you.
No matter how well planned the adversity is, within it is a seed of promotion or destruction. You decide which harvest you reap.
The first thing to note however is that your joy is the determinant. The adversity has one aim only, to take your joy away.
Joy isn’t a sleazy thing like many think. It’s actually a force of the recreated human spirit. I don’t know what you’re going through but rather than sit and weep over it, begin to rejoice by faith.
The Good News Translation says to count yourself fortunate! You’ve been presented with an opportunity to manifest the victory of Jesus.
Note that James wasn’t so concerned about who caused the adversity; maybe your errors, someones’ jealousy… Yet that’s what many get fixated on!
You see even if it was your own doing there’s forgiveness and wisdom available in Him.
So today release the force of joy, quit the murmuring, take the sack clothes off and begin to see the tides turn around in your favour.
I count it all Joy to be going through diverse tests and temptations. I declare that whatever may seems as adversity in my life right now, i navigate with the word of God, to turn it into a blessing. I maintain the composure of one who is Joyful, and i rejoice by Faith, knowing that victory is assured for me. Thank You Dear Heavenly Father, In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
