REMEMBER THE POOR
“And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.” Galatians 2:9-10
The Early church started out as a multiracial church because on the day of pentecost, all nations were in Jerusalem for the feast. Several non-Jewish nationals received the Lord Jesus and were baptised in the Holy Ghost.
Soon enough however the church became a Jewish group. To extend the frontiers of the message of the Gospel, God raised the radical lawyer called Saul who was later called Paul.
Here Paul gives an account of his call to the ministry and how he had gone up to see the Apostles of the Lord as he stepped out to do the work.
I would have expected them to give him a lot of dos and don’t. Strangely enough they didn’t. They only had one admonition for him which he said he was already eager to do. Simply, remember the poor!
Up until the point I saw this as a young minister several years ago, it beat everything I had known about ministry. No one seemed and seems to place premium on this again.
Let me tell you the sincere truth, Gods heart is with the poor and downtrodden of this world. Anyone who gives as little as a cup of water to them matters to God.
I have seen people literally command Gods attention by their giving to the poor and needy. Remember Cornelius, it was his prayers and alms that rose up to God as a memorial. And because of his givings and prayers, God could open a channel to reach the Gentile world through his family.
Giving to the poor was such a big deal even in the ministry of Jesus that when Jesus said to Judas to get to his task of betrayal soon enough and Judas stood up to do so, the other disciples thought that he either going to buy what they needed for the feast or he was going to give to the poor.
“And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.”John 13:27-29
You must have the poor, the needy in mind always! God takes their welfare very personally so much so that Solomon said “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD;
and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” (Prov 19:17)
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the opportunity given to me to be magnanimous to the poor and needy around me. I am open and sensitive to the plight and cries of the needy and destitute around me; making concrete plans to minister unto them with the substance You have blessed me with, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
