ONLY LOVE CHANGES PEOPLE
“The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.”Jeremiah 31:3
I discovered early on in life that the only thing that changes people is Love. The law does no good in changing people. Funny how we think that it’s the law that changes people.
Until the law came no one could tell what sin was and so it could not be punished.
Unfortunately however, the law and its punishments had no power over the conscience to change people. The fear of being caught and of retribution simply made man devise means to cover up their errors but not change their ways. The law only birthed fear and fear never changes a man.
I remember years back when I was a little boy I really wanted a Sony Walkman. It was a portable music and cassette player that was popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s.
My father however was uninterested in any form of entertainment for his kids. Well, as a young boy, I really craved this device.
So one day, I stole his money and found my way to the community market to get myself one.
To cut the long story short, Dad found out and came on my trail with one of his friends. I was caught red handed. They both dragged me to our pastor’s office where a few other church elders were waiting.
As expected they rebuked me, told me how disappointed they were and how horrible I was. Truth be told, I sat there, unmoved by all they were saying. I was actually planning what next to do to prove to all of them that I was really a bad boy!
However, at some point, my Pastor cut in, with his characteristic wide smile, He pulled me close to himself and said to all of them, ‘you know Ayo is a good boy. He won’t do this again. Leave him to me. You can all go.’
I was so shocked. When they left, he changed the topic completely. He began discussing his plans with me, asked me for mine, recommended some books to me from his library…
I was so stunned that I made a decision there and then never to do such a again so I don’t let my Pastor down. It was his love that changed me!
I wish more parents knew this. I wish more spouses knew this. I wish more pastors knew this. Love is what changes people. I am not talking about coding sin but seeing the good in people regardless of their errors and mistakes.
This everlasting love is what turns the most radical sinner into a saint and you and I have the capacity to extend it to the people in our world.
Thank you Father, for helping me appreciate others and value them for who they are. Thank you for your love that’s in my heart, which I express to everyone around me today, through my words and actions, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
