ONE THING IS NEEDFUL
“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42
The Word of God is the single most important thing in the life of the believer.
You see man was created from the Word of God. In the creation story in Genesis 1 is actually more an account of a recreation of a previous world that had been destroyed by Judgement. That world is what theologians call the Pre-Adamite world.
So the waters already existed. The land was there. God basically used His words to reorder the earth.
He then called forth living things from them. Seeds from the earth and fishes from the sea.
But Man was made out of God with His Word as raw materials. In essence the human spirit was created primarily by words.
As such, the human Spirit is most responsive to words, particularly the Word of God from which it was made.
Jesus and His entourage had just returned from a long ministry trip. Back here in West Africa, the visit of a person of honor isn’t taken lightly. Usually the women in the house will fix special meals and bring out the special plates while the men took the time to clean up the house.
I should think that the culture in the time of Jesus was no different hence Martha’s actions. She wanted Jesus to be comfortable. She wanted to host the Lord and his team well.
We will all agree that there was nothing inherently wrong with that.
Don’t forget that this wasn’t the first time Jesus was visiting them and that when he visited others like Simon and Zacchaeus they must have done same.
But on this occasion the Lord was teaching. Mary had better discernment to know that the Words from His mouth were so precious that any and everything else has to wait.
No man truly begins to encounter revelation knowledge till he places the highest premium on the Word of God.
Irrespective of how legitimate and important what you need to do is, only one thing is needful! Nothing else is.
That’s what I cringe at the levity with with some Christians take the gatherings of believers, our services, their personal study of the Word. Clearly many haven’t come to see how important the Word is.
Friends, Only one thing is needful. This isn’t an instruction. It’s an ideological phrase to help order and govern your life.
The Word must be seen as the only needful thing. Everything else is a choice.
Dear Father, thank you for giving me your Word which is the material to build my life and strengthen my faith. Through your Word, my understanding is enlightened to know the mysteries of your Kingdom, and i walk in your perfect will in all that concerns me. I take seriously, the personal study of the word of God in my life, as it is the most important thing to me right now, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
