LOVE, THE ONLY FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,” Galatians 5:22
I want you to note something today. Paul says ‘the fruit of the Spirit’ not fruits. In the Greek, it’s a singular word too meaning that he’s not referring to nine fruits.
You know, several people have taught saying that there are nine fruits of the Spirit. That’s wrong. There is only one fruit of the Spirit and it is love! All other eight are simply descriptions of this love. They are manifestations of this one fruit called love.
In fact, you are right to say that love is a composite fruit with all these other eight as component parts of this one big fruit.
Something else to note is that the translators erroneously capitalized the word ‘Spirit’. They did so because the assumption was that the fruit is borne of the Holy Ghost but that’s wrong too. Fruits are borne on branches not on stumps. Jesus is the vine we are the branches. We are the fruit-bearing part of deity.
It’s the recreated human spirit that bears the fruit not the Holy Spirit. They should have used small letter “s”, spirit, not the big one.
Here’s what Paul was really trying to get across; the true evidence of fellowshipping with, living and walking in the Spirit is that you bear the fruit of Love. You can speak in tongues and demonstrate great power without fellowship. Those are gifts. Gifts are endowments, fruits are growths.
And growth only occurs when there’s vital union and fellowship.
As such, true maturity isn’t indicated by works of power but the size of the fruit of love. Jesus said in John 13:32-33, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
By Love not power shall all men know that we are His disciples.
True discipleship is a growth in love.
I love the way The Passion Translation puts our text for the day. Even though it still misses the point about who bears the fruit but it’s close enough;
“But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit. Never set the law above these qualities, for they are meant to be limitless.”
Galatians 5:22-23 (TPT)
Dear Heavenly Father, today above everything else, I choose to grow in love and give vent to its expressions in my life. I am full of joy, kind, and at peace because of Your reassuring word. I am virtuous, gentle and strong in my spirit, full of courage and audacious faith. Nothing can stop my growth through and in love, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
