“Be ready with a meal or a bed when it’s needed. Why, some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it!” Hebrews 13:2
One silent but very salient teaching of the scriptures is that the saints should be given to hospitality. Truth is, it’s usually hidden in plain sight of the scriptures that it’s so easy to miss out on it.
For example, in an earlier epistle the Apostle Paul says “Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.” (Romans 12:13)
The Apostle Peter teaches the same thing “Use hospitality one to another without grudging.” (1 Peter 4:9)
So we are admonished to use hospitality both to strangers and to the brethren in the household of faith.
The truth is the way the world is structured today, there’s so much premium given to privacy and social disconnection. We tweet at people we have never met but never greet the neighbour next door. Our walls are built so high to ensure that no one comes in. This is very anti scriptures.
In the Old Testament, Abraham is recorded to have asked strangers into his house for some shade and a meal. He had no idea that he was entertaining God!
I’ve thought about it several times, how long more would his wait for a child have been prolonged if he didn’t entertain the angels of God that day. It was in that instance that the word was given and a time attached to when his son Isaac would be born.
Hospitality is a big deal with God. Extend a hand of generosity to strangers. Cook some extra meals and give to those down your street every once in a while.
Pay the bus fare of that elderly person at the bus station who seems stranded. Use hospitality without grudging.
I love the way the Message translation puts it. Be ready with a meal or a bed when needed. You know not who you may be entertaining.
Don’t forget the believer has become one with Love (God). We are the extension of the love and compassion of Jesus to the world around us, both through the Gospel and with our substance.
I am God’s outstretched arm to the needy and ailing world around me. I am open and responsive to the plight of the needy all around me. I open my doors continually, to those who are needy around me. I am full of compassion and empathy to those who need help in my world today, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
