CONTINUE IN HIS LOVE
“As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.” John 15:9
A revelation of the love of God is the most fundamental revelation of the christian faith. Regardless of what the believer knows, he’s only as solid and as grounded as his personal revelation of the love of God.
It was Jesus’ priority to model the love of the father to the disciples. He wanted them to know that they were loved by the Father but more importantly Jesus wanted us to see that God wants to love us personally.
Today we are loved in the same measure Jesus is loved. We are recipients of the very same love with which the Father loves the son because we have become one with Him.
This revelation rids of the performance mentality that plagues many believers. Too many are trying to earn the love of God. They do what they do in hopes that they’d be loved more of God.
What you must know is that Love is who God is not what He does. Yes He loves us but He’s more than a loving God. He is Love!
However the words of Jesus to His disciples is quite instructive. He says to them to continue in his love. It’s certainly one thing to be loved of God, it’s another to continue in that love.
Let’s see the way some other translations put it;
“I have loved you just as the Father has loved Me; remain in My love [and do not doubt My love for you].” John 15:9 AMP
Clearly, the responsibility to remain in His love is on the part of the believer. Immediately some think that must mean doing all they can not to annoy or offend the Lord. But that’s far from what He was saying. He tells us exactly how to remain in His love and that is by not doubting His love for us.
The only thing that can uproot you from the love of the Father is unbelief. Don’t doubt it. Don’t question it. Even in your worst state He loves you.
Then in the subsequent verse He gives us another key to abiding in His love. He says;
“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” Vs 10-11
The second key to abiding in His love is to obey His commandments. But before you run off thinking you know what He’s saying, He clarifies Himself again. His commandment is that you love others as He has loved you. In essence, receive and abide in His love and become an extension of the same to the world around you.
He loved us as the Father loved Him so that we can love others with the love that the Father has loved us.
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving us the way you love us. Thank you for your love which is shared abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. As I continue in your love, I become an extension of your love to a hurting and dying world so that I may bring hope, succour, healing and salvation to those around me. Thank you Father for making me an extension of your love. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
