BE A DOER OF THE WORD
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.“ James 1:22-25
As you study the New Testament writings you realize that there’s very little emphasis on obeying God or obeying the Word. I know this may sound strange to many believers but it’s nonetheless true.Instead the New Testament writers focused more on doing the Word as against obeying the Word.Is there a difference between both? Oh, such huge difference.Ezekiel prophesied about that difference.
Let’s read what he said in Ezekiel 36:27;“And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”
Note that the Spirit within causes us to walk in his statutes. He doesn’t demand us to walk in his statutes again. And we keep his judgments and DO them. Not obey them.
In Jeremiah 31:33 we see something similar,
“But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
The law is now in our inward parts. We don’t read to obey, we are programmed to do. There’s a world of difference. The Apostle James shows us how to become doers of the Word. Note that he describes a doer as one who looks and continues to look into the mirror of the Word.
That’s against what many preachers would say.He didn’t say a doer was one who strives to obey and keep the word. A doer is a looker. The hearer however sees himself in the mirror but forgets what manner of man he is.
Do you observe that in verse 25, he switches from talking about the doer of the word to a doer of the work? The work is to look, continue looking, and to keep the image the word shows you. Without striving to obey you will be walking in and doing the Word.
Today I declare that I am always committed to the study and meditation of the word of God. I look into the perfect law of liberty that shows me who I am, what I have, and, who God has called me to be. I appropriate the truth of God’s word and it becomes my reality daily. In Jesus’ mighty Name, Amen.
